History of its construction

On the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1889 which marks the centenary of the Revolution of 1789, the renaissance Republic wishes to make a coup d'éclat.
It launches a big contest in the Official Journal challenging the engineers "to raise on the Champ-de-Mars a iron tower, with a square base, of 125 meters of side and 300 meters of height".

The project of entrepreneur Gustave Eiffel, engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, and architect Stephen Sauvestre is finally selected among 107 projects. Gustave Eiffel signs an agreement with the government, January 8, 1887.

This project represented an extraordinary technical feat for the time: its design required 5300 drawings made by 50 engineers and designers. More than a hundred workers prefabricated more than 18,000 pieces in the workshop and 132 workers worked on the construction site during assembly.
